skid mounted generators
maybe someone has some input on this subject.
i am trying to determine steel fabrication costs for skids constructed of w14 x 43# beams.
the material costs is not a problem, i am looking at labor cost or cost by the tonnage.
if tonnage cost is applicable, does this cost assume labor & material combined? what is present tonnage costs?
any suggestions are welcome.

it depends on how complicated the fabrications is. i have seen structural steel fabrication vary from $1000 per ton to $2500 per ton.
if you have simple beams, standard shear (clip angle connection), minimum moment connection and welding i would use $1200 per ton. keep in mind the paint and finish of the steel can add a lot of cost. there is a huge difference between simple shop primer, hot dip galvanizing and inorganic zinc coating. also be selective in your beam sizes because on some sizes, you will pay a premium.
another consideration is to review your beam length. what i mean is the steel beams come from the mills in the following lengths (40, 50 and 60 footers). the shops will cut your beams from these lengths, try not to leave lots of waste because the shop will charge you for the full length of the next half length increment.
raw steel cost per pound is about $0.29 (about $580 per ton).
i would call some of the local steel shops and inquire for cost range. i find them to be very helpful.

i first would like to thank you for your time replying to my inquiry, it is appreciated.
the skid is of oilfield design, 100% welded, 300" x 96", with a loading hitch welded on both ends of the skid.
there are 7 crossmembers incorparated within the skid.
there are 6 beams which weld on top of the skid for the mounting of engine, cooling system etc.
the loading hitchs will be constructed of heavy wall pipe to accomodate a winch truch moving them on location.
there will be no exterior walls, or vertical componets welded on the skid.
