skateboard ramps
tens of thousands have been built,using wood,metal,fiberglass,concrete,lexan,you name it. has a professional eng. ever been involved in the design of something like this? are there any standards or building codes related to these structures?any info on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

i have been involved in the design (site classification and layout design only). from the experience i have found that the people involved do not wish to send the money, listen to advice, or keep to the design.
they tended to think that the engineer doesn't know enough about skate boarding to warrant being involved. i did note however that the people i did the work for are now replacing the steel edge strips (they didn't use the recommended lugs to obtain a good connection to the concrete), installing drainage to remove water from the centre of the main basin and replacing a section of concrete that lifted due to ground movement (it wasn't tied to the main slab as per the design for some reason). at the end of the day they ignored advice to save money on construction, money that they are now spending 12 months down the track.
there were no standards or building codes available apart from the standard concrete construction codes. a government department did supply some information with respect to dimensions of ramps, bowls, rails, etc. otherwise it was all to the requirements of the client.
as a project i found it to be fun and rewarding until the client tried to cut costs. next time i will spend more time ensuring that client doesn't try to cut costs.
