embedment angles in structural beam
i am working on a reinforced concrete building that is appox. 100'x 200'. the main beams are 100"x16" deep and run the short direction at 24'-6" centers. in the long direction there are 24"x16" beams at the edges. the detailer has specified 4"x6" llh embedment angles on both sides of the 24" wide beams at 4' on center. this means that in a couple locations of the 100" wide beams there is a 4" portion of the angle creating a discontinuity in the main load carrying concrete beam. the general contractor isn't concerned. but i am. i believe the detailer should have chosen a flat plate in those areas (on the inside of the 24" beam). am i overly concerned about this discontinuity or is it a valid concern ?
i may be slow this am, but, can you be more descriptive of the structure? as i read this, you have 100"x16"dp beams @ 24.5' centres, spanning 100'. what is the purpose of the 4"x6" embedment angles?
sure, i'll be more specific. yes, the 100" wide beams are spanning the 100' direction. (note: the beam is not a simple span but continuous with columns spaced at about 20' on center.) their are embedment angles on both sides of the 24" edge beams. the outer one is for a steel c-section for support of the curtain wall. the angle that i'm questioning is on the bottom inside of the 24" beam to serve as a kicker for the c-section. there are two locations where this angle (4" side up) is in the main structural beam. the angle has two 6" nelson studs on the long leg. do you think the 4" leg is creating a discontinuity within the main beam ?
