concrete silo software and design manuals
we currently design concrete silos by hand along with mathcad. we use aci 313-97. is any software out there that can analyze silos (48' dia. x 112' tall)? also, are there any text books or manuals that cover concrete silo design?

the best textbook on the design of concrete silos is:
“Desing and construction of silos and bunkers: by sargis s. safarian and dr. ernest harris.
unfortunately, it is out of print. try to get your hands on one if you can.
i have seen some guys program a spreadsheet and run it for the various heights.
i have not see any commercial software on this. i suspect it is due to the small demand. most firms that design concrete silos have their own internal methods and software.
i thought i heard that sargis safrian passed away. i am not sure if this true or not. he sat on aci 313 committee. i think he is one of the most knowledgeable engineers and designers of silos.

the portland cement association (i think) had a publication on design of silos... it was published about 25 or so years ago and i used it at the time for design... i doubt that i still have a copy, but i'll rummage through my stuff this evening.

it doesn't deal with concrete, just forces, but design analysis of beams, circular plates and cylindrical tanks on elastic foundations 2nd edition by melerski has software and is just over $100.
rummaged through about 10' of stuff last night without avail... might be that it got cleaned on one of my moves... still have some stuff to check... deals with a concrete design approach if i recall...

i'm not sure if you are going mild-reinforced or post-tensioned on the silos. if it is p/t, vsl has some good details for raidial post-tensioned silos, and they are always a good technical reference.
