unusual steel channel
for a steel structure built in 1917, i field measured a steel channel that is 12" deep, 5" flange width, with an average flange thickness of 1/2". many of the other steel beams were stamped with "jones & laughlin". the aisc design guide 15 doesn't have channels in it.
has anyone ever encountered a channel with such a wide flange before? even the mighty mc18x58 only has a 4 1/4" wide flange.
i just flipped through my 1900 jones & laughlin and i don't see anything like it. i only have cambria, bethlehem and carnegie from that era and it's not in there either. i also checked the aisc historic shapes database and couldn't find it. maybe it was a custom shape...
i checked my cambria book and the aisc 1st edition and didn't find it. it may be custom, as swearingen suggests. are you sure it is rolled and not bent? it may be faster to just calculate the properties.
thanks for the replies. it looked rolled to me. i did end up calculating the properties myself. i'm wondering if a wrong measurement may have been recorded.
