visual studio standard/proffesional
hi
i am about to take the step into the .net world from vb6. i can't figure out what version of visual studio i should purchase - standard or proffesional?
any advice? what useful/nice functionality will i get if i buy proffesional compared to standard. can i for instance create dll's with the standard package?
any input will be appreciated!

perhaps just start out with the express version? [can't beat the price.] -even the express version can build .dlls.
as you use the express version you can get a feel for what additional functionality you need.

start with express, then try the 9- day trial of pro. but in the end express will do 99% of what most beginners need. standard includes templates, class diagrams, mobile ce, setup projects etc... and pro does even more stuff you will have probably never heard of. i'd say unless you are very well up on programming and releasing software to companies, express should do you.

thank you for your responces. i thought of starting out with the express version but i also thought that if the paid versions contain any good and usefull extra tools i would gladly spend the money. if that is not the case - i will of course rather spend the money on toys for my kid...
the express version delievered with sw are for instance nothing more than appetizer. if i wanted to work seriously with driveworks for example i would buy the full package. but i hear you say that the visual studio express version is actually very good. correct?
so far i have done minor macros and small applications in vb6. i will never be a very advanced and full time programmer.

i cannot give an honest opinion since i have always been lucky enough to get the professional enterprise editions through work. but i will say that if you can really afford it or have the benifit of working for a company that is willing to pay because they know the roi is good . then get something that definately comes with msdn. that will help out good and i believe somewhere you can even get the sw and pdm api help files right into the msdn. i could be wrong but i saw something on that line somewhere.
you might even find a subscription to technet benificial. if nothing else, being able to download almost any type of business app or os for development and testing is worth the cost alone. and believe it or not the community seems pretty helpful also. i have no complaints.
and last but not least. get yourself a good var that has a programer on staff that is willing to help. i know i flamed my var here befor but that was because i was upset. after we sat down and opened the lines of communication it really came down to a lack of, that was the problem. all in all they are a great bunch of guys and i have learned so much from thier vb guy about pdm and sw api that i can write some basic dll's myself now for pdm.
just to add my opinion - the only thing i ever needed professional for was to have conditional breakpoints. it's easy to work around that though in express.
