api/vb course ?
hi,
posting this just to get opinions from anybody to see what you think of this course offered by javelin and i think by other companies as well. i should have posted before i signed up but too late now. i think it is over priced but i guess it depends just how good it is. please let me know what you think about it. thanks

not heard of them but what do they offer you, how do they train you, and do you get anything at the end of it?

i think my brain would be fried after 5 days, especially if a person is not familiar with basic or solidworks. i would think that going through that much information in 5 straight days i wouldn't be able to retain much of it.

i would have to agree with dan. i don't think that you can tell a complete beginner (i don't know your skill level ben) the basics in 5 days and have them digest all of it. you need to learn the fundamentals of the language first. then you need to move into the specifics. maybe someone will disagree with me, but that is how i have learned and it worked well. even if you were to retain bits and pieces of the knowledge, would you truly understand why the code works the way it works?

plenty of great books out there. free web resources for vab abound. start by learing vba and then get into sw api.

i have been fooling around with vba vb6 for about a year maybe alittle longer, i have a small understanding of how to write macro's but i was getting tired of having to ask so many questions on solidworks forum (as some of you might also be getting tired of me asking so many questions). i have a few macro's that i want to make and they are a little to complicated for what i know. i figure if i would take a course for it then my time spent would be alot more efficient. i am very fermilier with solidworks so that might work in my favour a little. i am not taking this course just because of the macros i need, i think it would be fun to be able to make macro's with out all that frustration.

since you have been programming for a year and you know sw, i'm guessing that you will get quite a bit out of the course. i would also like to get some training in programming. i normally like it when they have a few days between classes so that i can try out the codes and have a little better understanding of what is going on rather than having a crash course.

as roland stated, there are plenty of great books and code references available. the way i learn is by trial and error. i read through the many books that i have purchased and with what i have learned in a given chapter, i set out to make something of it. when i am confident that i fully understand the previously read information, i then proceed to the next chapter. if i don't understand it, i practice and re-read until i do. as a rule of thumb in the many obstacles in life, you need to learn how to walk before you can start to run. as you stated, you have some experience. you will probably benefit from the course. as dan stated, there should be a bit of time in between sessions. that way you can come up with questions that can be addressed the next session. if you don't understand day 1, the likelihood of understanding the following sessions is very unlikely. you may have well just tossed that 3 grand at the wind.

that makes alot of sence to "trial and error" make sure you understand something completely before you go on to something else.

some point next year i may be hosting an event in the uk and possibly one in the us for a 5 day class seminar at a venue where myself an possibly another programmer will host. you pay attend the event for the week (9-4 with lunch break) and you would be provided with a new copy of the solidworks 2009 advanced programming book (currently writing), source code to all examples, and a course booklet you follow at your own pace.
each day would be split into two. the first half all antendees would be taught as a whole by myself going through stages of the course at a set pace covering all areas (finishing the course on the morning of day 5), and the second part of all days are left to work at your own pace so that those working at a slower pace can catch up on the days lessons so they do not fall behind for the following days, and those who work at a faster pace can get one-to-one help from the venue programmers or myself where needed and to ask any questions or be shown anything you require.
