floor joist patch
the top chords of several tji floor joists were completely cut by a crazed tile layer.
there is not room or access to place new joists next to the damaged joists.
would a patch work? i am thinking of packing out the joists with the appropriate sized plywood and sandwiching the damaged section with another appropriately sized material joists and gluing and screwing the whole mess together.
if you think this would work how can i accurately model this patch?
any ideas are greatly appreciated.


i assume there is bending in the top chord in addition to compression? if so, how do you plan on fully restoring the bending properties?
is the chord material machine stress rated? if so, can you readily obtain this material or use the equivalent of this material?
you should hire a licensed structural engineer to design a fix for this.
a glued scarfed joint on either side of the damage can duplicate the original strength in the top chord.
listen to ucfse... civilperson's advice is sound, but you're not likely to be able to work out the solution on your own. i've done a number of these patches in residential jobs, and you'd be surprised how hard it can get to make the fastening work. field gluing is all well and good, however i'm not the biggest fan of field gluing to a existing (chopped up) plywood web in field. be very careful with this one...

working in new zealand, thinking of my snow covered home...
the best thing to do is to call tji and ask for their help. the joist warranties have been compromised, and to maintain the warranty, any fix will need to be designed and inspected by a tji representative.
