when i try to calc the i in the steel manual i don't get close. i'm using the regular geometric formula's but i'm off. what would i be doing wrong.

more info please. how do you know your number is off and by how much. have you checked other sections to see if are still off.
i is axd*2 plus io for each component.
that's area times d squares (distance from the neutral axis squared) plus moment of inertia about it's own na.
is that what you are doing?
