ballistically sound structure
good day,
i have a masonry building to design. it is to be a medical gas building that is required to be "ballistically sound". i have tried searching online to find out what that actually means but no luck. can anyone help oe guide me as to what that is?

you first of all need to determine the level of attack resistance.

just a guess, but i have heard of high pressure cylinders taking off like missiles when their valve is broken off. is that what they are talking about?
in fact the mythbusters did an episode where they intentionally broke the valve off and shot cylinders at a cmu wall:
with vertical reinforcing in addition to blocloc or whatever...

"that is required" is the key phrase. who is requiring it? ask them what they mean. maybe they mean gas cylinders can't shoot out. maybe they mean it's bulletproof so outsiders can't shoot through. if they don't say and there's not some standard terminology, they need to specify what is intended.
thanks all. it's the client that has requested that the structure be ballistically sound. they have since said that they want it to be bullet proof. i know blocloc to be a waterproof coating applied to masonry blocks. is this usually done for such structures?
an 8"cmu wall will stop a 22 calibre rimfire round, but will not stop a 30-06... you need to know the level of attack!

it sounds like they do not care for the bullets, but may be concerned about larger projectiles or a blast pressure.
one guide for can look at the fema suggestions (possibly document 325)for structures against projectile penetration. it is backed up by a few years of actual testing at texas tech where a 12' 2x4 was fired at the wall out of an air cannon at about 150 mph. it is fun to see and many people would just do it for entertainment. the criteria was no penetration into the the interior.
generally, the approved methods were 8" reinforced block or 8" reinforced concrete although recently wood frame walls with close stud spacing and 2 layers of 3/4 plywood plus a sheet of steel were approved. the plans for shelters (about 8x 10 or slightly larger)give some good guidelines for reinforcement of the walls, roof materials and connections. they also address the door hardware and direction of the door swing (you do not want an outside swing if there may be debris that blocks it.
when you get to doors and windows and ventilation, that is a different problem that must be addressed.
if not applicable, it is interesting.

yea, you need to know the weapon of choice, the standoff distance,etc.
worst case, mock-up and test.
try a couple of layers of ballistic nylon cloth embedded in the concrete in addition to normal reinforcement. it will reduce blast effects, concrete will still shatter but not fly around as much in pieces as the nylon will tend to hold it together.
