analyis of embedment plates with headed studs
i have aci 349.2r-97 "embedment design examples" but it only covers one or four headed studs and relatively small plates.
are there examples or a design guide for larger plates with six to ten studs?
the plates are embedded in concrete (usually beams or columns) and support w shapes welded to the embedments with two angles.

aci 318-02 appendix d deals with embeds but i know of know examples for that method. the pci manual is slightly different and has some examples if i re
also check out nelson company (studs) as they have a nice small handbook with examples of multiple studs with embedded plates.

jae is right on. i have an older version of the nelson studs manual he is talking about it. i am not sure if it is still around. i have used it many times to design embeds.
another really good reference for headed studs is the pci manual.
the problem with referencing the nelson stud catalogue and the pci manual is that they do not follow the aci 02 appendix d method. this is a relatively new method which was developed by pca. if you are trying to maintain adherence to the ibc you are required to use the aci method.
they are having all kinds of trouble with this aci method in the design world because of edge distance criteria and spacing. also, buildings located in seismic design categories c and above require ductile bolt failure before concrete conal failure. this is a real issue because embed plates get very large and bolts actually become smaller.
aci actually published an article condemning there own design method in the concrete international magazine of march 04.
yes, but appendix d in the aci 318 is only in the 2002 version of 318 and this is only referenced by ibc 2003. so if you are under an earlier code, appendix d doesn't apply.
the ibc 2000 section 1913 covers anchorage to concrete in nearly the same manner as aci 318-02 app d. there may be some changes in phi or a few coefficients but the procedure looks almost identical.
