i would love to go to dubai. i heard they are building dubailand. which is 2x as big as disyneyland. it is good to see that our gas money goes to good use.

i was struck by "luxury finishes ... being replaced with upgraded finishes" ... how much more upgraded can you get ? or are they down-grading luxury to upgraded ??
they got the extra money to upgrade the luxury finishes when gasoline topped $4 a gallon.

what sort of framing is used for this type of construction and is it concrete framed of steel framed?

i think it is a concrete structure.
the construction tollernces were a big concern, they went to the extremes to make sure they had it truely vertical. a variation on 1/16" to 1/8" per floor could be a disaster, but concrete allowed corrections to minimize the load and eccentricity effects. the italians in pisa were the first to discover the effects, but this tower is not built on muck.
if it is anything like the hotel ($2500/night minimum), i am sure the upgrades are really that since they build show pieces for the international business traveler.
i was in the hotel and would love to see the tower when completed. i also would like to see the indoor ski hill with snow making.

both. the first 130+ floors are concrete while from 600+m onwards it switched to steel construction. basically there are problems with pumping concrete to such heights so it was designed to be completed with steel-framing. a friend of mine who was in dubai recently took a photo of the builders kibbling the last of the concrete pour up to a height of 600m.
if you can get a hold of a high quality photo, you will actually notice there is no scaffolding around the floors underconstruction or the plant levels, all part of the dubai construction practice of building massive buildings on reclaimed land, let's just hope in 10 years time there will enough people to fill all these hotel rooms under construction. ski resorts in a desert subject 50c (120f) temperatures just doesn't seem sustainable to me, particulary when you consider the water supply relies on desalination.
