any recommendations for gd&t training?
hi all,
i have done 2 certificates in gd&t, short courses really each about 20 hours, spread over 3 days.
unfortunately being a little short sighted back then i did not wisely make an effort to use the then new skill of applying gd&t. it was not a complete waste as i can interpret gd&t dwgs with some reasonable sense etc, maybe even apply the odd tolerance or two.
however if i was pushed to really apply solid gd&t techniques to a complete machine, it would be difficult to put it mildly.
currently i am working on the design of industrial machines for the demolition industry. where i am working, the old coord tolerance system of dimensioning is common practice. i would like to introduce the use of gd&t to illustrate the significant benefits.
i realise this is a huge cultural change for some places as understanding the process has alot to do with accepting the change to something new.
so presently i have gone back to basics and due to time contraints i am revising what i had been taught many years ago by using alex krulikowski's "fundamentals of geometric dimensioning & tolerancing, second editon", also i have his self study course "tolerance stacks" which i will progress to later.
my preferred option is self study at home as i am diciplined enough it gets done.
what i would like to know is would/could anyone be kind enough to share the thought, opinions, ideas, tips, tricks(although i don't know if there are any for this field of study/work) about how else i can bolster or aid my studies?
i have seen a gd&t trainer cd by a. krulikowski but unfortunately it is very expensive, although i am sure it is very good and would love to have it. does anyone know where i can get this maybe cheaper?

in my opinion, the best training you could possibly do for gd&t would be to inspect some parts for conformance to the drawings. this will show what sort of drawing specification is clear and meaningful.
the next thing to get is the standard itself. asme y14.5m-1994 is quite readable, and it is the thing you want to know all about. you might as well get it first hand.
i took a college course on gd&t, and they handed out notes, but i do not refer to them very much. some of the textbooks out there have weird charts in them. these are probably meaningful when the author teaches the course, but they could confuse you on their own. look for
i agree with drawoh. in addition, if you find a way to get some kind of training/experience with a machine shop, it too would be very helpful.
