assembly to weldment
i have an assembly that i want to turn into a weldment! if i save it as a part i get surfaces and not individual parts that can be detailed seperately. the assembly is a carry over from a previous job and should have been a weldment to begin with, now i'm using it in another job as a sub-assembly and this causes problems with the parts list of the main assembly, "parts only" displays parts of the weldment and "top level only" shows sub-assemblies i've used for convenience in putting the whole assembly together. if i can change the assembly that should be a weldment into a weldment it then becomes just a part in the main assembly parts list, problem solved, otherwise it looks like having to re-model it (big job).
anyone got any ideas please?
thanks,

right click on the subassembly configuration you are using, go to properties and check "don't show child components in bom when used as sub-assembly". i myself frequently make weldments as assemblies because they are more flexible.
alternatively, how about saving it as an iges file. then when you reopening the file, click options and select "import multiple bodies as parts". might make the file huge though.
when saving an assy as a part, you should have three options;
exterior faces
exterior components
all components

thanks chaps, i've used some of these techniques in the past but the memory begins fade with age!!
regards,
peter c.
