wind load on wall
wind load on wall
for a common building, windward wall say has 15 psf positive wind pressure and leeward wall has 11 psf negative pressure. in same vicinity if we have just one simple cantilever wall, it will be deisgned for 15+11 = 26 psf wind load?
a cantilevered wall is treated differently than a building. it is normally treated per table 6-11 (asce 7-98)or figure 6-20 (asce 7-02) for solid freestanding walls and solid signs.
i hope this helps!
one publication for loading on a freestanding wall that i have is a 1961 supplement to the national building code of canada; the pressure coef for this document were based on earlier work done in switzerland. for a length to height ratio of 1:1 to 1:10, the maximum pressure coef is 1.5 and the force centroid is at 0.4 * l. for an infinitely long wall, the coef diminishes to 1.2... total force is coef * q * h * l. this includes for windward and leeward loading and apparently gusts... but i don't know the gustiness of the area where the original document was prepared... this should be a bit of a guide... i used the coef for a 12' freestanding masonry screen a few months ago.
