weathering steel in contact with galvanized components
weathering steel in contact with galvanized components
when detailing an uncoated weathering steel structure, are there problems associated with placing galvanized components (i.e. diaphragms, bridge drains, bolts, etc) in direct contact with the uncoated weathering steel?
i seem to think there will be some amount of galvanic action between the two components but i really can’t seem to find much guidance on this topic.
thanks.
the two materials should be close enough electrogalvanically and there should be no additional corrosion; you might post this in the corrosion engineering forum.
weathering steel forms a tight oxide surface and the corrosion is limited to this. as a caution, the weathered surface can drip and stain other stonework or concrete.
nope, theres no problem with it. if there were, there wouldnt be any point to galvanizing anything.
it's when you start dealing with metals like copper do you have to worry.
they used to warn against using galvanized bolts with weathering steel girders but they don't any more.
