treated wood
i wonder if i need to use treated wood trusses for this application.
the trusses are for a small roof structure, which will be covered on top so they will not be exposed to rain directly but underneath is completely open without any walls. we've got a long and rainy winter here. shouldn't i use pressure treated wood for the truss?
thanks,
minez
typically no, treated wood wouldn't be required. i don't think i've ever even seen a wood truss that was treated, at least not in the state of washington. since it's an open structure, i would use treated posts.

as long as the truss is not exposed directly to water and any moisture it is exposed to can readily evaporate so the wood moisture content is generally less than 18%, rot is not a problem.
of some concern, with freezing and thawing in a humid condition, it is possible for the truss plates to work their way out... you might want to have the owner keep his eye out for this...
