anyone have experience with research engineers' program "section wizard?"
the price is $700.00, $500 for staad pro owners. the ads i've seen make
large claims.

autocad is neither precisely free but its 3d modules allow for the calculation of mechanical properties of both sections and volumes. i rarely use it but the feature is within my autocad 12 win module ame.
