are there any aci provisions for minimum (tied) column width? i'm trying to match 8 inch cmu with an 8x16 column and i know it not the easiest to construct with 1.5 inch clearance. would there be an opportunity to reduce the cover to 3/4 inch, similar to a conc. wall. i wonder what the tilt-up association uses for tied wall piers/columns.

be careful with your fire ratings on a column that small as well.
i've gone down to 10" columns in stairwells - but not smaller - you'd have trouble getting your ties to fit and your vertical bars get so bunched together that you might have trouble getting concrete consolidated below.
we have 8-inch wide columns on many projects. they're a pain but possible.
