metric units
i have a german catalog listing steel shapes and properties. there is a column with a heading "moment wx/cm3". what does this column mean?
how can it be used to select a beam designed from the determination of "i" and "s" in american units?
i'll venture a guess. since the units seem to be cm^3 i would guess that wx is the section modulus (our "s"). this implies that w is the second moment of inertia (our "i") and x is the distance from the neutral axis. does the magnitude of the numbers in the column seem about right?
1 inch = 2.54 cm
hopefully you can get a definitive answer.
section modulus is i/x, but the units are right ...
wx is the equivalent of sx - w stands for "widerstandsmoment".
moment of inertia is usually denoted either ix or jx in german.
1000 cm3 = 61 in3
