failing glulam beam
failing glulam beam?
i am having what i believe to be a problem with a laminated beam pair (2 16" beams). i am seeing a 1" sag at mid-point in the beam over a 24' span. we are using a truss system and our contractor tells us the interior walls are not putting undue pressure on the beam. the floor has actually pulled away from the interior walls. the opposite dimension is 26' and we have 10" floor joists, 3/4" plywood floor. any ideas why this may be happening?

pstacks...a 1" deflection at midspan on a 24' span is not really excessive. it is between two common control points known as l/360 and l/240 or length of span (in inches) divided by the control of 360 or 240, depending on the criticality of deflection. l/360 is commonly required where you have plaster or other "hard" ceilings and you don't want deflection to cause cracking. l/240 is for more flexible applications, such as suspended ceilings or similar.
don't depend on your contractor to tell you whether something is loaded or not. most don't understand load shedding or load transfer. get a structural engineer involved to look at it.
