hi all
is it a common practise to use a steel beam for carrying brick walls ? if so what provisions should i follow?

yes, structural steel lintels are common. for general information, see the brick industry association, technical note 31b "structural steel lintels". here is link to the tech note page
limit deflection to l/600 or 0.3 inches.
