reference dimensions with multiple number of places
reference dimensions with multiple number of places
is it acceptable to callout a reference dimension that also identifies number of places? for example:
(8x r.02)
it looks odd to me. i would just like to know if it is considered best practice.
thanks!
lisa
it would still be reference so the 8 would be reference.
if the 8x is explicitly defined elsewhere, even if just by the drawing views, and it adds clarity i don't see the problem.
however, if it's just clutter, get rid of it.

thank you. but what if a ref similar to my example is called out in a detail view and not all 8 occurences are shown. would it make sense to callout 8x?
lisa
i think that it would only add confusion in that situation, and i would leave the 8x out of the reference dimension.

ithurner, the trouble is the 8x is also reference, or at least is likely to be interpreted that way. unless you have an explicit "8x" elsewhere, or show 8 instances in drawing views, there arguably isn't a driving "dimension".
now underneath the actual detail view rather than next to the reference dimension you could say "8 places" or something.
kenat,
imo, the best practice is to represent the 8 holes linked together by mean of dimensions and reference one with the 8x r0.02 so that it looks clear to the reader.
avoid to have the holes placed on different views, as the reader would loose time looking for them (i.e. reference only the number of holes represented on the view, not the total amount of similar holes of the part)

thanks all! i generally do not like it when the designers call multiple instances in a detail view if i can't count all occurences. it confuses me. would you put 8 pl under the detail view or is 8x acceptable? i thought with y14.5m 1994 pl isn't used.
lisa
"x" may be used, it's not mandatory. places or pl is still ok. i often spell it out when it's not next to the dimension or something as to me it's sometimes clearer.
kenat,
only if the detail view shows just one occurance.
