unicode strings

my application only supports unicode text. i want to get oddbtext elements as 2-byte wide character strings. are codepages always necessary for this?
if so, how do i figure out the appropriate codepage to use for gettings unicode strings from a given oddbdatabase? is it given somewhere else in the database?
i saw other posts on converting to unicode, but none seem to address whether you always need codepages or not.

i believe the thing i was looking for was
oddbdatabase::getdwgcodepage
starting with 2.0 version odchar is wchar_t and unicode string can be obtained directly from odstring.
dd performs conversion to unicode at file loading now.
