in the older versions of dwgdirect we used odavematerial and odavelight to visualize the materials in a drawing. i see that the latest versions of autocad or architectural desktop generate oddbmaterial. if our dwgdirect-based application saves a drawing with ave materials and lights and we open that drawing in acad 2008, then acad transforms the ave materials into oddbmaterial object.
so my question is: what is the difference between the two types of objects (ave and oddb) and do we have enough support in dwgdirect for the oddbmaterial object?

ave materials/lights were used in older ac versions. at some point adt and later plain autocad were made using another render which was already used by other autodesk products. different renderers use different material etc. representations.
dbmaterials/lights reflect data of new renderer.
autocad 2007 uses new renderer but contains no ave-db stuff conversion. this conversion was added in ac2008. (surely conversion between different rendering data representation is always non-trivial task because not all data can be simply transfered).
dwgdirect supports dbmaterials with the same limitations as ave: access to the data but no material support in rendering.
ideally after an old file is loaded ave stuff should be converted to db like ac2008 does. but currently conversion from ave to db materials is not implemented in dd.

so in our application we'll do a reading of oddbmaterial settings... and leave the other stuff untouched.
not sure about creating new materials - may be create both ave and oddb... but for now it is not so important.

is there an expected completion date for the oddbmaterial rendering?
timeline
i assume this is a difficult task...do you have an idea of the magnitude of this effort?
