1965 steel plate
1965 steel plate
i have a 1965 drawing referencing 3/16" carbon steel plate on a rectangular hopper. the hoppers are collection under a cement kiln electrostaic precipitator. what astm specification would these likely have been made to? i dont believe they would have been a-283 or a-285 plate, probably either a-36 or its historical equivalent. this may help -- i have a 5th edition aisc manual (dated 1949) and it says for forgings use "carbon-steel forgings for general industrial use" - astm a235. for sheet and strip use "tentative specifications for light gage structural quality flat hot-rolled carbon steel" - astm a245. under "rolled base plates" it provides carbon% limits and chemical composition, but says no physical tests required. the historical equivalent of a36 was more than likely a7 steel... check the sixth edition, page 1-77. mike mccann mmc engineering thanks. of course as soon as i posted this my customer put the project on hold.... |
