for a very good introduction you can try the book by broek: "practical use of fracture mechanics". it is quite expensive but you could try alibris for a used copy.
read any of the numerous articles and papers by tom swift of the faa.
google the paper "rough diamond" by steve swift (casa australia) and bob eastin (faa).
