setdescription crashes creating new layer, what could be wrong?
oddblayertablerecordptr precord = oddblayertablerecord::createobject();
precord->setname( "somename" );
precord->setdescription( "somedescription" ); //crashes immediately here!

layer's description is stored as xdata of acaeclayerstandard application.
setdescription() tries to ensure that such regapp exists in database.
in your case the layer table record is not added to database yet.
call setdescription() after appending the layer to layer table.
